Socks for My Friend L.

socks

Finished last week while I was offline. Had enough Sockotta yarn left over from the baby sweater for these socks and another pair of socks for a wee one-year-old bairn.

Another Arrival

sweater

Insanely busy week preparing for fund-raising event at work, but still had to finish this, for my young cousin and his girlfriend.

Winter White

Scarf knit in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I have no idea what size needle I'm using (13?) and this second glass of Leelanau riesling means I can't be fussed to check.

Winter Storm Watch

Winter storm watch

I'm ready.
Bring it.

Update, December 1, 2007, 8:00 pm: The snow and ice have started. I do not recommend the Full Moon though. Weird, metallic aftertaste. Better options out there for hunkering down.

Gryffindor Scarf

gryffindor scarf

Per a request, I am knitting a Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry scarf in Gryffindor colors. The project is not moving along as quickly as I would like (scarf is BIG - 6.5 inches wide and 72+ inches long) and I am getting the annoying "ladder" effect between two of the double-pointed needles. Hopefully it will even out after washing.

Knit in the round in nice soft Patons Classic Merino Wool colors 204 "Old Gold" and 230 "Bright Red" on size 7 needles.

Firenze

Plymouth Yarn's delicious Firenze, found on sale at Flying Sheep. I bought the five remaining balls of this dye lot. For what purpose remains to be discovered.

For the New Arrival

Baby Sweater

I did not post this when I finished the sweater in December because it was a surprise for the expectant parents.

Knit with Sockotta self-striping yarn, color #5613, on size 1 and 2 straight needles. Matching buttons were a fortunate find at Hancock Fabrics.

Knitting Socks

Knitting Socks

Yarn: Regia Bamboo Color, color 1064 "Ethno"
Needles: Double-pointed US size 2

Socks knit in the round are my hand-made specialty. I've made scarves, mittens, fingerless gloves, hats, and a short-sleeved sweater (too small), but I keep coming back to the socks. They're seamless and comfortable, the yarns are fabulous, and a pair takes two or three football games to knit on the double-points.

Knitting in the round means that every row is knit, instead of going back and forth on straight needles alternating knit and purl rows. The sock starts at the top and is knit in a tube until my favorite part - turning the heel - where the knitting makes a 90-degree turn in a few short rows. After the gusset and foot, I finish the toe with kitchener stitch to avoid a seam across the tootsies.
